TMS Questions

Common questions about TMS therapy

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can help when therapy and medication aren't enough. Here are the questions we hear most often.

What is TMS and who is it for?

TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) is a non-invasive, FDA-approved treatment that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate the areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. It is often a good option for people with depression, OCD and other conditions who haven't responded adequately to medication or talk therapy, and it is approved for adults and for teens age 15 and older.

What does a TMS session feel like?

You sit in a comfortable chair wearing ear plugs while a magnetic coil rests against your head. You will hear clicking sounds and feel a gentle tapping, and you stay awake and alert the whole time. Afterwards you can go straight back to work, school or your usual activities — there's no downtime and no additional medication required.

How long does TMS take, and is it covered by insurance?

Most patients come in five days a week for an average of 30 sessions, and each session lasts about 30 minutes. TMS is covered by most major insurance plans, and our team will talk through your coverage with you before treatment begins.
